SPCA Tampa Bay is the only non-profit, open-admission animal shelter and public veterinary center in Pinellas County. Our shelter in Largo cares for more than 8,000 animals annually that have been surrendered by their owners, along with injured wildlife.

SPCA Tampa Bay cares for dogs, cats, pocket pets, exotic animals, and livestock like goats and pigs. Animals receive immunizations, medical care, behavior training and enrichment, and loving care while they live at our shelter. Our adoptions volunteers work to match families with animals that are a good fit with the family’s home, lifestyle and personalities. There is no time limit for an animal’s stay at our shelter, and every animal receives compassionate care, regardless of its breed or size.

SPCA Tampa Bay is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit locally governed by a volunteer board of directors. Like most U.S. animal shelters, we rely entirely on our program revenue and fundraising to sustain our operations, provide care for animals and serve the community. Despite a similar name, we are not affiliated with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) or Humane Society of the U.S.

A team of 80 staff members and 250 dedicated volunteers help us fulfill our mission.

Services:

• Animal admission, including the care of every surrendered animal
• Animal transport for sick or injured pets
• Lost/found pet assistance, working with our community partner Pinellas County Animal Services
• Wildlife rescue, working with local partners to provide medical care and rehab for wildlife
• Animal cruelty investigation for wildlife and livestock

Programs:

• Pet adoption, with a focus on matching every animal with a loving forever home
• Pebble’s Food Bank, to provide free pet food to Pinellas County residents facing a financial hardship
• Free pet behavior help line, to address one-on-one behavior issues
• Sniff University training for dogs and cats, to help all stages of a pet’s life
• Summer Camps, to offer hands-on learning experiences about caring for a pet to youth
• Veterinary care for owned pets

SPCA Tampa Bay expanded its programs in 2016 to help pets still in their homes. Our Veterinary Center, located in St. Petersburg, provides two separate services for any pet owner: a general, full-service veterinary practice and a high-volume spay/neuter clinic.

Veterinary Center services range from wellness, medical, surgery and general care services, along with spay and neuter services, for dogs and cats. With each visit, clients can feel good knowing they are helping to “paw it forward” for other animals in the community.

A portion of all revenue from the Veterinary Center supports the programs and services at our shelter in Largo. It also helps other families provide veterinary care for their pets through the Caldwell Keeping Families Together Fund.

History: SPCA Tampa Bay has cared for Pinellas County’s homeless pets for more than 75 years. It was founded in St. Petersburg in 1940, and it moved to its 10-acre campus in Largo in 1962. SPCA Tampa Bay returned to St. Petersburg when it opened a second location – the SPCA Tampa Bay Veterinary Center – in 2016.
