This weekend, area shelters may be closed or have altered hours in order to participate in the Mega Adoption Event sponsored by First Coast No More Homeless Pets and Petsmart Charities. About 1,000 animals will be available for adoption at the Jacksonville fairgrounds, 510 Fairgrounds Place, adjacent to EverBank Field. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Chopper is a 2- or 3-year-old dog. He has been in foster car recovering from being hit by a car and his face shot up with BBs. Now he is neutered, current on shots and ready for a great home. He will be at this weekend’s Mega Adoption Event. He is not adopted meet him at Clay County Animal Care and Control, 3984 Florida 16 W., Green Cove Springs. Adoption hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Taffy is a 10-year-old Siamese cat. She is craves attention from anyone she lays her eyes on. She is spayed, microchipped, current on shots and vaccinated against rabies. Meet her at the Mega Adoption Event or Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services, 2020 Forest St. Adoption hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. During October, all pit bull breeds or mixes are $20 in recognition of Pit Bull Awareness Month. All other adoptions are $40. (904) 630-2489. coj.net/pets.
Another Jacksonville animal available for adoption is Baby Girl, a 3-year-old Staffordshire terrier. She was part of a recent hoarding case and is a sweet girl who seeks attention. She has lots of energy and can easily clear an 8-foot-fence so she needs proper exercise. She is spayed, current on shots, microchipped and vaccinated against rabies.
Adoptable animals are also available through:
■ Nassau County Animal Services, 86078 License Road, Fernandina Beach. Fees include spay/neuter surgery, 1-year rabies vaccine, microchip and at least one set of booster shots. ■ St. Johns County Pet Center, 130 N. Stratton Road, just off U.S. 1 in St. Augustine. Adoption hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Gates close at 4 p.m. Saturday. St. Johns dog adoptions are $35 for males and $50 for females and cat adoptions are $20 for males and $30 for females. Fees include neutering/spaying, rabies vaccinations and shots.
