It was a very happy ending for a 9-year-old girl in Montgomery County, TN, and her lovely and loyal dog, Cody.

“She’s the only dog I’ve ever had in my life and she’s a really good dog,” Alliyah McKay told local News Channel 5. “She would follow me everywhere and she would protect me and stuff like if I went outside she will follow me too.

Last week, however, Cody got herself stuck in a culvert while out carousing without her human best friend.

“When I first looked for her I was walking around and I was like, ‘Cody, Cody,’ and finally I heard her whimpering,” said Micki Fielder, the little girl’s grandmother.

After a brief search, Fielder discovered the 15-year-old pup trapped in a nearby drainage culvert.

“First, I really didn’t think it was a problem until I realize she was in there and it was really hard to pull out I started freaking out and I started crying a lot,” said McKay.

They decided to call the professionals in for help, dialing 9-1-1.

“The good Sheriff’s Deputies of Montgomery county came out and they worked and they worked,” said Fielder.

“We did the best we could just wear their hands and they had some Tupperware containers we used for scooping the dirt out,” said Brian Lynch, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Cody endured about a half hour or so of confinement before the rescue team got her free.

“With the limited tools we had and what they had it was difficult and it seem like it was going to take a lot longer than it did but we were able to get the dog out,” said Denis Bowles, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Little Aaliyah is now thankful beyond measure to have her best friend back.

“You guys did a really good job,” McKay told the police officers. “It was hard work, too.”

And thankfully, it won’t happen to Cody, or any other dog, again. Someone has since come by and placed large boulders in the drain to prevent this from happening in the future.

Wednesday morning, a West Virginia dog found himself in quite a putrid pickle when he fell into a septic tank!

Luckily, when the dog’s distraught family called, the Loudendale Volunteer Fire Department and volunteers at the Davis Creek department worked together to get the dog out.

With a rope and some man- (or perhaps woman-) power, they were able to pull the dog to safety after he’d spent about 20 stinky minutes in the muck.

Happily, no injuries were sustained, WSAZ reported. All he needed was a good bath.

Our guess is he’ll need more than one!

With luck, the fall-in hazard will be corrected before the family dog (or someone else!) ends up clogging the works!

Luna is safe and sound now, but not before giving her family — and really the whole dog-loving community — quite the scare this week.

A rabbit is what her family theorizes caught the 8-year-old Jack Russell terrier’s interest, sending her into chase mode and before she could help herself, she’d gotten herself stuck beneath the family’s home in Centennial, a town not far from Denver, CO.

Before long, she could be heard barking for help.

Firefighters arrived on scene after being called by Luna’s owner, Anne Timmerman, and three differenct agencies worked collaboratively and energetically to save her. The process took some 30 long hours.

That is when fire crews were called in to help, working for hours just to rescue Luna.

Once Luna’s rescuers realized this was going to be a more arduous task than initially believed, the technical rescue team from South Fire Metro arrived with gear in tow. They cut open the Timmermans’ deck, then deeper, through a concrete slab beneath the home.

By day’s end, the whole neighborhood it seemed — friends, family, neighbors, animal control and even strangers — were arriving in droves to see if they could offer assistance.

Six hours into the rescue, the little dog popped her head out, eliciting cheers from the crowd!

The Timmermans are very grateful to everyone for their help in freeing Luna, who seemed to be fine, but was taken to the vet clinic anyway – just to be safe!

Gidget, according to sources, is still super smelly even post-baths, but the important thing is that she’s safe and happy to be home after her ordeal at a wastewater treatment plant in Colorado.

The 2-year-old mastiff’s woes began in a way that didn’t surprise her owners.

Her “sibling,” Buddy, a Houdini-like hound with a knack for escaping their home in Pueblo West, let them both out for a stroll. Buddy came home midday Monday. He was wet and muddy. And Gidget was nowhere to be found.

Owner Mandi Smith, of course, went out to search.

In the meantime, the folks at a wastewater treatment plant a few miles from Smith’s house heard Gidget barking for help. Tony Campbell found the dog on the edge of an aeration pond. Since nothing floats in wastewater, Campbell couldn’t save her himself. A crew from the Pueblo West Fire Division was called in and used a ladder to reach Gidget.

After a thorough hose-down, she was transferred to the care of Pueblo Animal Services, where she got two decontamination baths at the shelter before being returned to her owners.

“Everybody at the shelter just loved her,” Smith told WSB Radio. “She was a star.”

She added that the pup was ecstatic to be home.

“Out of all the dogs, she’s the baby of the house.”

Both dogs were treated to lots of love — and soap.

“They have gotten so many baths and they still smell,” Smith said. “The poor bulldog is keeping her distance.”

Imagine you’re walking your dog, lakeside, in wintertime and you see a strange dog wander out onto the ice and fall through. Would you scream for help? Call 911? Or would you march straight into the water, breaking the icy crust as you went, to rescue the dog before hypothermia set in?

This Vancouver woman went with C in a resounding manner.

Area resident Ben West was walking his pup in the park when he noticed another dog out on the ice of the frozen lake. A moment later, the ice gave way and the dog fell in. It was unable to get itself up and out, and quite far from the shoreline. Other onlookers called and encouraged, trying to coax the dog out.

Then one woman decided to take matters into her own hands, heading out into the lake and breaking the ice as she went.

“People were kind-of cautioning her — ‘Don’t do it,’” West told the CBC. But all she said was, ‘It’s a dog, I have to.’”

She was waist-deep by the time she reached the dog, her winter garb doubtless heavy and waterlogged. Holding onto the animal, she trudged back out the way she’d gone in. By the time she reached the shore, paramedics, who had been called by those waiting, were ready with blankets.

West never got the woman’s name, but said she was calm throughout the ordeal.

The dog, post-toweling, was back to playing with the other dogs in the park, no worse for wear.

“I was just in shock—and really amazed at this woman’s heroic instinct to go do this thing,” added West. “It wasn’t even her dog.”

Two ice climbers are being hailed as heroes after a daring rescue on February 4.

George Meres and Franklin Jacobs scaled a treacherous ridge near Berthoud Pass in Grand County, Colorado to rescue Yoshi, a shiba inu who had become separated from his owners while on a backcountry ski trip the day before. The pup spent the night on the mountain in near-blizzard conditions before being rescued.

Brandon Fox was skiing in the area with his dog when they became separated, he told Sky-Hi News last week. Several hours of desperate searching yielded some results, though they weren’t out of the woods (or off the ridge!) just yet. Yoshi was spotted high on a rocky ledge.

Liat Arochas (Yoshi’s other owner) joined him but they were unable to reach the dog and so called for assistance. Grand County Search & Rescue, however, were otherwise engaged in a rescue and unable to help right away. The near white-out conditions were dubious, as well. Fox and Arochas had no choice but to leave Yoshi behind for the evening.

“We didn’t know if he would survive the night,” Arochas told Sky-Hi News. “It was so windy, it was snowing. When we got down to Georgetown we went to the police station and an officer said there was a cold front coming through that night. We looked at each other and we started crying.”

Their fears were assuaged the next morning, however, when they returned and heard Yoshi’s barks — but the pup was still in danger. There was a steep cliff below, a descent from above would be the best course of action, but officials for Grand County rescue feared the snowfield above the dog could cause an avalanche. They declined to attempt a rescue.

“The worst part was, we could see him the whole time,” Arochas said. “We could see him looking down on us. It was like a death sentence for him.”

Reunited and it feels so good!

Fox and Arochas stayed on the mountain, hoping someone might be able to help. It arrived in the form of the ice climbers, who made their way up to Yoshi and brought him down to his family. He was unscathed by the ordeal.

They celebrated before returning home to Denver, stopping in Idaho Springs for dinner. Yoshi enjoyed chicken and french fries.

“It was an amazing feeling, having him back in our arms,” Arochas said. “It was a miracle.”
