Oldest Wombat Celebrates 29th Birthday

Patrick, who lives at the Ballarat Wildlife Park in Australia, turned 29 years old Sunday. He’s believed to be the oldest wombat in the world.

“Birthday hugs for me! I’m 29 woohoo,” he shared in a post on his Facebook page. “Please come say happy birthday to me this week… carrots accepted!”

The marsupial has good reason to celebrate. Wild wombats usually live until they’re about 5 years old; the average in captivity is 20 years.

Patrick also weighs a little more than the average wombat, at 88 pounds. (The normal range is 32 to 80 pounds, according to National Geographic.)

Before his retirement, Patrick had lots of visits from celebrities, including Nicolas Cage, Kim Cattrall and Kirstie Alley. And this week, he’s gained so many fans on his Facebook page that he now has more than the park where he resides.
