Dolson, a tiny, little Chihuahua mix, is 11 years old. He originally found himself at the Norfolk SPCA in Norfolk, VA, because his owners could o longer afford to care for him, but sadly, he has since been in and out of their care. The last time he returned to the shelter, in fact, he was severely emaciated! But thanks to a grant from the senior dog lovers at the Grey Muzzle Organization, the SPCA was able to get him all the TLC and medical care necessary to bring him back to great health.

Staffers here feel like Dolson is consistently overlooked by adopters because of his age, but they know he still has a lifetime of love to give.

Little big man Dolson, say his caretakers, has a huge heart. He loves to be the center of attention, but if you’re not around, he’s happy to do his own thing (much of which consists of napping in comfy beds!).

He is looking for an adults-only home in which to live out his days and dole out his love. Everyone, they believe, would be happier with a little sidekick like Dolson around to brighten their days!

About Grey Muzzle’s work with the Humane Society of Western Montana

The Humane Society of Western Montana is excited to partner with the Grey Muzzle Organization to help fund life-saving veterinary care for senior pets living with their forever families. A $3,000 Grey Muzzle grant to the Humane Society’s Nandi Wishcamper Senior Fund will award families funds to put towards expensive veterinary care for their dogs age 7+.

When senior pets end up in animal shelters or rescues, they often stay much longer than younger animals, hoping for a home of their own. To keep these older pets with their families, and to prevent them from entering a shelter, the Humane Society’s Nandi Wishcamper Fund provides funding to those in financial need to cover the cost of urgent veterinary care for their four-legged companions. Financial awards to families are often coupled with similar awards from Friends of the Shelter, Missoula Animal Control’s auxiliary 501(c)3 nonprofit fund.

While the Nandi Fund is available for both dogs and cats of all ages, the Grey Muzzle grant is dedicated to dogs age 7+.

The Nandi Fund originated in 2009 after Nandi, an 8 year-old German Shorthair Pointer, suddenly died. Her family set up this Fund in her memory to help people keep their pets.

If Faye isn’t “gettable,” we don’t know what dog is!

And the folks with Get A Bull rescue in Huntington, NY (that’s on Long Island) are keen on finding this beauty a very special home.

Faye is between 9 and 10 years old and found herself in a large municipal shelter after her owner went into a nursing home. She is in early-stage kidney disease, which is mostly managed via prescription diet at this time. This sweet, graying girl is also deaf.

Although found to be friendly with other dogs while at the shelter, Faye moved from her first foster’s home to another. She seems to be better suited as a solo dog. Of course, Get-A-Bull staffers are most interested in finding this silver-faced sweetie a forever home and will happily continue to cover her medical costs for life (that includes the prescription food!)

Faye is very friendly with humans, adults and kids! She is very affectionate and an easy-going girl around the house. This beautiful pibble also is house-trained and she often opts, entirely on her own, to hang out in her open crate where she feels very comfy.

She is truly special, say her rescuers and foster, and they’d love to see a special person give her a happy home!

Faye is currently in foster care in Massachusetts, but Get-A-Bull will happily adopt her to homes throughout the Northeast. Though they are based on Long Island, adopters in the New York metro and New England will be happily considered.

“Get A Bull is a collaboration between a group of passion-driven animal lovers looking to make a difference in the lives of pit bull dogs in the New York Area. Our collective backgrounds in the area of animal rescue, animal shelters, dog training and veterinary medicine have given us special insight into the plight of the pit bull breed of dogs. We know these dogs and we know them to be just that, dogs. We have seen the impact that overpopulation, backyard breeding, and neglect has made on these dogs. We see that the shelters are filled mostly with pit bulls and that most good dogs don’t make it out alive due to lack of space. We know this is not the fault of the pit bull, but of humans who use and abuse them and continue to breed them. We also know that discrimination towards this breed by landlords, insurance companies, government and in the media, continues to make this an uphill battle. Hey, Catahoula fans — feast your eyes on Lio!

He’s looking for his fur-ever home!

Lio needs someone who has a strong passion for dogs and is patient. His fosters say he’s proven that he can be a great family member!

Lio is a super smart, athletic (lace up those Ree-bark sneakers!), and charismatic Catahoula dog. See above and below for “proof of handsome.” And, of course, he’s so ready for ADOPTION!

Here are what the folks who know and love him say are Lio’s “Life Rules:”

1) You be my confident, committed leader in life, and I’ll in turn show you my best smile and signature adorable scoopy tail wag. Basically, I’ll love you.

2) Please, give me space when I eat (because you, dear human, know at least one person who will try to snag a fry from your plate — not fun!)

3) Provide me with a solid routine! I crave structure, much like I crave the treats I get for ALL the commands I know.

4) Got cats? Fine with me! I even lived in a foster home with a special-needs adult cat. If you have another dog, have us meet first because, see, when it comes to playtime, I like interacting with humans over dogs. Just my preference. I might obsess at first over food and toys, but resource guarding isn’t the biggest concern. The hard part is that I want all of your time and attention and don’t want to share my human!

This smiling girl is Allie! Folks at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa estimate her age to be about 12. She’s a cuddly pupper, one who needs to be the only spoiled princess in the house. Here’s a little more about her….

BIG FAN OF: Napping on soft things.

NOT A FAN OF: Sharing her living space with other dogs. She needs to be the only dog in her home right now. Children are also way too much for her, so she needs an adults-only home. Adopters will speak with a member of our behavior team about Allie’s history.

SPECIAL FEATURES: Allie is a couch potato who enjoys relaxing and spending time with her people. She does well on a leash and loves walks! She went on a Dog’s Day Out field trip recently, and here’s what the volunteers had to say about her: “Even though Allie is 12, she has a young soul. She was so excited to get in the car with us, and she loved going on walks through our college campus and meeting new people. We took her out to get lunch with us and people all loved how soft she is. We also learned that she likes to herd people, she would circle around behind us and look back for us while we were walking. After our walks we went up and laid down and she was super snuggly.”

OTHER REASONS SHE’S SPECIAL: Tests indicate Allie is in kidney failure. She will need a special diet and may also need additional diagnostics or medications. Thanks to a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization, Allie has gotten all the special care she needs while with ARL. Kidney failure is a progressive disease and will worsen over time. Many animals can have good quality of life for years with proper therapy, though it is impossible to predict how the disease will progress. Allie also has been diagnosed with hip dysplasia with severe arthritis in both hips and her lower spine. This can lead to lameness or difficulty walking as the dog ages. Allie will need regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight and muscle tone and may require pain medications. Please consult your regular veterinarian about these conditions prior to adoption.

DREAM HOME: A calm, quiet home with plenty of soft spots to relax. She will be happiest with patient people who will give her time to settle in to her new home.

The ARL’s shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not breed label.

Todd, 8, came to the Leon County Humane Society in Tallahassee, FL, along with seven other dogs from a multi-agency rescue. The dogs had been in a hoarding situation, with dozens of them living in filth. It was horrid. Deceased dogs were discovered in the home, as well.

Sadly, this situation had gone on undetected for years and many of the dogs had experienced little to no positive interaction with people during that time.

Todd is now safe in a foster home, where he is being provided the love, nutrition, and veterinary care that he had previously been denied. Dogs from situations such as these often require more time to find a loving adoptive home, but the folks at LCHS (not to mention Life With Dogs!) believe they are worth the effort.

Thanks to a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization, his caretakers can give Todd everything he needs.

Todd, say those who know him, is very sweet and laid back. He adores sitting in laps and going on walks. He is shy at first, and warms up to women faster than men, but he seems to do pretty well with other small dogs and cats. He’s house- and crate trained and weighs 13 pounds.

Like all Leon County Humane Society dogs, he is already neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, and has been tested and found to be free of heartworms. His adoption fee is $250 and LCHS is willing to adopt out of the area.

Izzy is a sweet female Boxer (approx. 10 years old, 41 pounds), a loving gal who’s looking for a place to call her own.

She came to stay with the folks at Prairie Paws Animal Shelter through no fault of her own and staffers there says she will be a great companion with whom to watch your favorite TV show with at the end of a long day.
