Who doesn’t love the sight of a majestic horse on the water? The painted ponies are gorgeous. The water background, in this case, Tampa Bay, is a wonderful expression of living art.

If you are in Tampa Bay, look up cponies.com. They will give you an opportunity to experience this. I happened to pass by while having a bike ride. I had to stop to share.

By Kyung M. Song / The Seattle Times / Sunday, October 5, 2014

Pet Travel Safety

Washington — Harley was the bulldog’s name. He was pronounced dead at baggage claim at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport last year despite a passenger’s attempt at cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Two months later, a mixed-breed Rottweiler arrived lifeless at Sea-Tac in his chewed-out kennel, dead of what later was diagnosed as aspiration pneumonia. And at Logan International Airport in Boston, a male cat named Daunte twice escaped from his kennel before he could be loaded into the cargo hold; he was found the next day after a ramp vehicle had struck him dead.

The three were among at least 62 animals that died, were injured or lost since 2010 while being flown aboard Alaska Airlines, a tally that makes the Seattle-based company one of the nation’s leading carriers in recent years for reported pet casualties.

Only Delta, the nation’s busiest airline, with six times Alaska’s passenger traffic, reported more incidents, 74, to the U.S. Department of Transportation during the same period. But for 2013 and for the first seven months of this year, Alaska topped the casualty rankings.

The reasons for Alaska’s number of victims are unclear. The company suspects it may handle more than its share of animals. Alaska is practically the house airline in its namesake state, where residents have few alternatives for shipping their pets long distances.

Alaska, the nation’s ninth-largest carrier by passenger traffic, has one of the industry’s most pet-friendly policies. It offers “Fur-st Class Care” for most small domesticated pets, including potbellied pigs, birds, hamsters, turtles and nonvenomous snakes, either in the passenger cabin or in the plane’s climate-controlled cargo hold. Several domestic carriers, including JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines and US Airways, do not accept even dogs or cats as cargo.

Alaska also is one of few airlines to accept snub-nosed dogs, breeds that are more susceptible to heatstroke and respiratory issues.

Bobbie Egan, spokeswoman for Alaska, said the company ferries about 80,000 pets annually, virtually all of them without a hitch. She said Alaska employees are specially trained and follow strict federal guidelines to ensure safety.

“Transporting pets, whether in the cabin or as checked baggage in our cargo hold, to us is just like transporting a family member,” she said.

In all, Alaska and other U.S. carriers count several dozen animal injuries, losses or deaths annually — a minuscule fraction of the estimated several hundred thousand animals transported by air.

In the vast majority of incidents, pets suffer unexplained deaths or hurt themselves while attempting to escape their kennels. Airlines are rarely found to be at fault.

The Transportation Department figures, however, capture only a partial safety picture. That’s because the federal agency currently requires tracking only for household pets. That exempts scores of other animals, including those bound for pet stores or research labs.

Starting Jan. 1, the department will require airlines to fill in some — but not all — of the missing data. That’s when airlines for the first time will have to report the total number of animals they handle, finally making it possible to calculate complaint rates.

More significant, the agency expanded incident-reporting requirements to include not only all warm-and coldblooded household pets, but dogs and cats shipped by breeders and suppliers to retailers and researchers.

The rule changes come four years after the Animal Legal Defense Fund petitioned the agency to close loopholes it said camouflaged the true extent of risks to animals. Three U.S. senators, including Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin, D-Ill., also urged the department to expand incident reports to animals that aren’t pets.

The National Association of Biomedical Research opposed the proposed rules as an “unnecessary” burden and cost to carriers, breeders and research facilities. Airlines for America, whose members include Alaska and most other major airlines as well as UPS and FedEx, lodged similar objections.

The Transportation Department finally decided to exempt commercial shipments of animals other than dogs and cats from reporting requirements. That was a setback for animal-welfare organizations that had argued to include, for example, monkeys and other primates bound for laboratories.

Animal-welfare experts generally consider flying inherently stressful, and they recommend against cargo flights.

Carter Dillard, director of litigation for the Animal Legal Defense Fund, said numerous variables make it difficult to draw conclusions about any one airline’s safety record.

The animals’ health, total length of trip, extreme temperatures and other factors can play a role.

The defense fund’s original petition for expanded mandatory reporting was triggered by the August 2010 death of seven puppies shipped by a breeder in Tulsa, Okla., during a heat wave. But because the dogs were classified as a commercial shipment, American Airlines did not have to record the fatalities.

Dillard contends that the Transportation Department adopted a selective definition for animals to appease carriers, research institutes and universities.

“The whole point is to get a complete picture of the risks to animals,” he said.

Flying has been shown to be particularly hazardous to short-nosed or snub-nosed dogs. The breeds, which include French and English bulldogs, pugs, Boston terriers and shih tzus, by Alaska’s calculations accounted for nearly 40 percent of its 16 pet deaths during the past two years.

United Airlines accepts short-nosed breeds as checked baggage, but Delta and American Airlines do not. Egan said Alaska is reviewing its policy on such breeds.

Mary Beth Melchior, founder of Where is Jack?, a pet travel safety-advocacy group in Miami Beach, Fla., said Alaska and its competitors can do more to avert potential harm. One way would be to refuse pets as cargo if they seem unfit to fly.

Another way, she said, would be to better train baggage and cargo workers, who in some cases are employed by outside contractors.

Your Pets in Flight

Your dog, cat, rabbit or other household pet can fly with you — but not on all airlines, not to all destinations and not at all times. So check your carrier’s policy on whether it accepts pets in the passenger cabin only or in the baggage compartment, whether pets can fly international routes, or in hot or cold months.

Animal-welfare experts generally advise against transporting pets by plane. If you must, here’s how you can ease the stress of flying:

∎  Check whether you need a health certificate and a rabies-vaccination certificate from a vet. Document requirements vary by states and other destinations.

∎  Animals flying in the passenger cabin must be small enough to stow their kennels under the seat.

∎  Avoid connecting flights and don’t travel during times of extreme temperatures.

∎  Sedation is not recommended, as it can cause problems for animals in high altitudes.

∎  Make sure the kennel is large enough for the animal to stand up straight and turn around.

∎  Kennels should be well-built and escape-proof.

Manhattan Good Neighbors, a student program that focuses on fostering development with neighborhoods surrounding the K-State campus, held Pet Preparedness yesterday, in accordance with National Preparedness Month. The event aimed at encouraging pet owners to ensure they are prepared in times of disaster and was hosted as part of America’s PreparAthon!, a program that gives communities and organizations the opportunity to prepare for specific hazards through drills, group discussion and exercises.

According to the American Pet Products Association, 68 percent of American households, about 82.5 millions homes, own pets, making them an integral part of the family.

The event was attended by representatives from state and local governments, the private sector and the Veterinary Health Center at K-State.

“(During disasters) people are displaced from their home as well as pets, and it’s very emotionally trying for people, so having their pets there is comforting and takes down some of the anxiety,” said Dr. Susan Nelson, veterinarian at the center, which offers primary care for pets in the community and surrounding areas. “Sometimes it’s the only thing they have that’s a semblance of their home life besides their family members.”

Laurie Harrison, emergency management coordinator for the Riley County Emergency Management Agency, said the agency had focused a lot on emergency preparedness for people but there had been a lack of focus on pets.

“This event allows us to bring that (pet preparedness) to the forefront and to help people prepare for their pet in case of a disaster or emergency,” Harrison said.

Harrison said in her experience as a first responder, people are reluctant to leave their homes if they do not have a place for their pets to stay in.

“In an ice storm we had in 2007, we had people without electricity who were cold but would not leave their homes because they had an animal and they had nowhere for that animal to go,” Harrison said.

She said with the amount of time people spend with their pets, it was important to educate people on the importance of forward thinking when it comes to taking care of pets and preparing for emergency situations.

Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s disaster preparedness program uses Fred, their German shepherd mascot to illustrate how pet owners can ensure that they are adequately prepared to care for pets in times of disaster.

“We demonstrate the purple backpack that he’s wearing and the stuff that’s in there – extra food, water, toys, first aid kit and flashlight to show people how to prepare a disaster kit,” said Michael McNulty, director of homeland security operations at the Kansas department of Health and Environment, who also handles Fred the Preparedness dog.

Nelson said it was important for students and the people in the Manhattan community to be aware of the needs of their pets. She said using all the resources available and staying prepared would make dealing with the impact of any potential disaster easier.

Lynda Bachelor, project coordinator for HandsOn K-State, said Pet Preparedness aimed to educate people about the necessity of being prepared to take care of their pets during natural and man-made disasters.

“Katrina and Sandy, those two hurricanes brought to how pets are a very close part of people’s personal well-being and health,” she said. “When you’re in danger and they’re a part of you, how do you take care of them as well.”

How Not to Greet a Dog

It is important that we show dogs proper respect. And it is especially important to teach young children how to interact with man’s best friend. When greeting a dog for the first time, we make think our behavior is harmless but in actuality, we are stressing the dog out and stressed dogs will bite!

Below is a chart to help us understand what behavior is proper and improper when it comes to introducing yourself to a dog and help your new relationship get off to a good start.

Teach Your Dog to Jump Through a Hoop Video

Is your canine a star? Of course she is! And the best way to help your pooch make the most of her talents is through trick training. Tricks don’t just showcase a dog’s skills, they help her build confidence and strengthen her bond with you.

One of the more impressive tricks a dog can do is jump through a hoop. It’s a dramatic-looking feat, but it can be taught in a few easy steps. Watch the video below for a step-by-step tutorial on how to train your dog to jump through a hoop.

However, keep in mind that if your dog has a history of hip, knee, shoulder or elbow problems, you might want to skip this trick. In dogs who have chronic or periodic lameness, you generally want to avoid leaping activities due to the added stress it puts on the joints and provide low-impact exercise instead.

How to Break 7 Common Bad Dog Habits

“No! Bad dog!”

How many times have you scolded your misbehaving canine with those words? Probably too many. But before you fly off the handle, one of the most important things to understand about correcting bad behavior is that punishment doesn’t work. Many times, dogs don’t understand what they’re being punished for, and will respond by learning to hide the behavior.

To help you get a handle on your dog’s conduct, we’ve listed common bad habits. We offer tips here and we also link to longer articles on each subject as well. But remember, it is always important to discuss behavior issues with your veterinarian who can determine if they are caused by a medical problem. If he gives you the all clear, consider enlisting the help of a trainer or behaviorist to teach your dog appropriate go-to behaviors.

1. Chewing Inappropriate Objects

Chewing is a natural behavior for dogs, since they explore their environment with their mouth. It also relieves stress and boredom, and helps keep their teeth clean.

When you catch your dog chewing inappropriate objects (like shoes, as many dogs do), redirect the chewing to an appropriate item, like a chew toy or stuffed Kong. Then praise your pup for selecting an acceptable outlet for his chewing behavior. Talk with your veterinarian about which chews are safe for your dog.

2. Barking at the Doorbell

Dogs bark at the doorbell for any number of reasons. They could be excited or anxious about visitors, or they might bark as a watchdog tendency. Some dogs even equate their barking with you opening the door, so they think they’re training you to open the door when they bark. One of the best ways to stop barking at the doorbell is to teach and reward an alternative behavior, like sitting on a nearby mat and waiting for the door to be opened.

3. Digging in the Yard

Digging is an extremely rewarding activity for dogs, whether they’re digging to reach a scent or simply to release pent-up energy. Help your dog practice this behavior appropriately by giving him a sandbox or section of the yard where he’s allowed to dig.

Make sure this area has clearly marked visual boundaries, and use treats and toys to make this new digging place more exciting than the old one.

4. Barking in the Car

Those shrill yaps from the backseat can be your dog expressing many emotions, from fear and frustration to exuberant joy. The best way to address barking in the car is to employ restraint equipment, like a harness or a crate to help your pet feel more secure. Other options include using a pheromone spray to help relax your dog, or giving him a chew toy to focus on during the car ride.

5. Begging at the Table

No matter how cute or desperate for food your dog looks, consistency is the key to curbing dinner-table begging. Make sure no one in your family feeds the dog from the table.

Even if his begging only works once in a blue moon, he’ll repeat and escalate the behavior until all his barking and whining pays off with a rare food reward. Instead of giving in, provide your dog with an appropriate dinnertime activity, like enjoying his own toys or food puzzles.

6. Urine Marking Inside the House

This is one of the most “eww”-worthy bad behaviors. Dogs pee on things to mark territory or leave messages for canine friends, which is generally acceptable outdoors. If you catch your dog urine marking (or even preparing to mark) inside the house, quickly interrupt him with a “no” or an “oops” and take him outside. Then reward and praise him for choosing to urinate outdoors.

To prevent frequent urination in the same household spot, remove the scent of previous urine marks with a good enzymatic cleaner.

7. Stealing Food Off Counters

Trainers call this bad behavior “counter-surfing.” It’s one of the more difficult habits to break, since Fido experiences a huge reward for stealing the food: He gets to eat it! The easiest way to solve this problem is to eliminate the opportunity. Don’t leave food around, and use baby gates or fencing to restrict your dog’s access to the kitchen when you’re not there to supervise him. Teaching the “leave it” command is useful for when you catch him in the act of stealing snacks.
