It takes a village to save a coonhound.

Lucky for Jake, the 7-year-old pupper found wandering the streets of Pennsylvania more than 2,000 miles from his Arizona home, such a village exists in the dog-loving rescue networks strung across the nation.

Jake, who had been missing since last year, was first happened-upon by Adam Herbaugh, who was walking his own two dogs at the time. Herbaugh took Jake to a local vet, where a microchip scan yielded the information to find his true home.

His owners were delighted; but chagrined. They couldn’t make the cross-country trip to get him. And so, the village stepped in to help.

Enter Renae Metz, president of A Darrah Bull Bully Rescue.

Metz told ABC News that the owners reached out via Facebook, asking for assistance in getting their dog home.

“My sister, Heather Shaw, is a transport coordinator [for A Darrah Bull Bully Rescue]. She used Facebook groups which consist of transport volunteers to coordinate Jake’s trip home,” Metz said.

The group requested “qualified volunteers,” each of whom tackled different sections of the journey from Pennsylvania to Arizona. The three-day trip went from May 18 to 21, with Jake making lots of friends as he traveled — 20 volunteers, 30 stops and three kind folks who let Jake stay overnight along the way.

Eventually, Jake was reunited with his Dad, who took him the rest of the way home to his mom and brothers!
