This lazy dog in Scotland has gone viral on Twitter; apparently folks out there really relate to his lack of interest in leaving what looks like a supremely comfy bed.

In the 16-second clip, you hear the dog’s owner saying, “Come on we’ll go a walk, walk, walkies.”

Not even food couldn’t persuade this warm, cozy pup – whose name is Malcolm – to get out from under the covers.

The dog’s owner, Mhairi-Louise Brennan, posted the video of her dad cajoling the dog to Twitter and at press time here, it had more than 260,000 views.

How long CAN dogs sleep?

According to the American Kennel Club, most dogs average about 12-14 hours of sleep per 24-hour cycle. Older dogs tend to need more (just like older humans). They tire more easily and benefit from additional rest to function properly. Similarly, pups (like human babies) tucker themselves out with all the exploration and play and so can sleep quite a bit, as well.

Larger breeds, too, tend to sleep more than smaller ones.

Breed is a factor, as well, when it comes to a dog’s sleep cycle.

Working dogs, often bred to be active in longer shifts with tasks that need their complete attention can spend most of their day active while other breeds, meant more for companionship and sedentary lifestyles, will sleep more.
while dog sleep patterns are similar to humans’ – their breathing slows, their blood pressure drops and their heart rates decrease and generally in about 10 minutes’ time enter the REM (rapid eye movement) phase. This is when you might see them “chasing rabbits,” legs or feet or tail twitching and even whining and making noise.

Interestingly, though, as humans have extended sleep cycles, spend about 25 percent of that time in the REM stage. Dogs only stay here for about 10 percent, due to their inconsistent sleep schedules. Since they have the wonderful, enviable ability to fall asleep easily and rouse to alertness quickly, they need more total sleep than we do to make up for the lower REM rates during their cycles.

Don’t fly home with leftovers, America! That’s the message out of Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport this week, after a Homeland Security with a nose for contraband thwarted one incoming passenger’s attempt.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection office says that brave hero Hardy – a beagle whose job title is Agriculture Detector — did just that, hitting on a scent in a traveler from Ecuador’s luggage on October 11. Inside? A 2-pound pig’s head (cooked). Although we’re sure Hardy really deserved a bite, it was nonetheless seized and destroyed.

Pork and pork products from other continents are not permitted into the United States — this, in an effort to avoid introducing foot and mouth disease, classical swine fever and other animal diseases into the domestic population.

CBP Area Port Director Carey Davis hailed Hardy’s work as illustrating “the tremendous expertise of our four-legged K-9 partners in protecting the United States.”

And while the pig’s head may not surprise you…

…some of the things that a dog can detect actually might!

Bacteria: Did you know that since the 1970s, dogs have been employed to detect disease in beehives? This helps beekeepers and other interested parties prevent the germs from spreading and infecting healthy hives. Dogs have made the detection process smoother and faster, inspecting as many hives in 45 minutes as it would take scientists to do in two days.

Diabetes. Yes, really! With their incredible, sensitive noses, dogs can be trained to sense when blood sugar is high or low and alert their diabetic owners to take action. They can even run and fetch an insulin kit.

Cow fertility. You would think the bulls could smell it, too, but dogs can actually detect it sooner. And that’s more important, because most cows are impregnated by artificial insemination. What’s more, bull semen is expensive! So some farmers have taken to using specially trained dogs to sense when their cows are in heat, just to make sure.

Guy the beagle has gotten loads of attention since becoming the signature “rags to riches” story of the shelter-dog universe. His story – as much of it as we know, anyway – begins with our hero dog lost in the woods of Kentucky and ends with his moving to Kensington Palace, courtesy of the young actress who adopted him from a rescue in Canada, and then went on to be the newest member of the Royal Family.

Now, Guy has apparently “written” his story for the benefit of fans (and hopefully new generations of adopters-not-shoppers!) around the world. According to the Daily Mail, it is set for release in November.

Its full title – His Royal Dogness:The Rebarkable Stoory of Meghan Markle’s Rescue Dog, is reported to be officially endorsed by Markle’s new family, with help from co-authors Camille March and Emmy-winning writer and producer Mike Brumm. It was illustrated by artist Gerald Keller.

Back in November of 2017, just after it was announced that Markle was engaged to Prince Harry, news broke that she’d taken Guy from her then-home in Toronto to London, settling into Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace. It was also much reported that Markle made a difficult decision, too, leaving her other rescue pup, Bogart, behind. The senior dog was reportedly too frail to make the trip.

Guy, as many now know, was found wandering and eventually made his way into the hands of A Dog’s Dream Rescue in Toronto. Markle saw him at an adoption event, fell in love, took him home and the rest is now a fairy-tale story if ever there was. From the Kentucky woods to paparazzi chasing him as he reportedly rode in a limo with the Queen herself.

In an interview earlier this year, the Duchess of Sussex revealed: “One [dog] is now staying with very close friends and my other, little Guy, he’s in the UK, he’s been here for a while.”

During her time filming the show “Suits” in Toronto, Markle regularly posted photos of her dogs on her former Instagram account.

We recently reported that last month, the royal couple reportedly welcomed a new dog called Oz to their family. Photos have yet to emerge of the new pup, but we’re betting that Guy’s tell-all book will be a big seller for the upcoming holiday shopping season.

Dolores Doherty, founder of the Oakville, Ontario-based A Dog’s Dream Rescue, admits she never imagined she’d see one of the organization’s alumni riding in a limousine with the Queen of England*.

“Such a thought never entered my mind,” she told the Courier-Journal amid laughter. “Most do end up in really good homes, with nice stories and lots of feedback from owners on how the dog has changed their lives,” she added.

Guy, of course, hit something of a lottery, becoming canine royalty over the weekend when his owner, Meghan Markle, said her “I dos” with Prince Harry. It’s been a long journey for the American dog, who originally hails from the Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Mt. Sterling, KY.

Many volunteers helped guy on his journey northward, where Markle eventually met him at an adoption event. She was looking for a companion for her other dog, Bogart. She took them on a walk together and the rest is (now part of royal) history!

Guy’s original shelter is a low-kill facility that euthanizes only as a last resort. It works closely with rescues to send dogs to places where they can get adopted, said shelter director J’Rie Elliot.

“(Markle) could have any dog she wanted. … And she opened her heart and home to a shelter pet. That makes all the long hours, sleepless nights and transports worth it.”

Elliot, who was just a shelter volunteer at the time, doesn’t remember Guy personally, but her predecessor, who has since retired, recalled him as a sweet little dog, she said.

“Our motto, ‘adopt don’t shop,’ has been heard on such a high level,” Elliot said. “She could have any dog she wanted. She can afford to buy any breed. And she opened her heart and home to a shelter pet. That makes all the long hours, sleepless nights and transports worth it.”

The marriage makes Markle the Duchess of Sussex. No word on Guy’s new title.

*Reports of Guy’s limo ride with the Queen may be unsubstantiated (see this Snopes post for details), but regardless, he is a royal beagle now!
