Ferndale Dog Park
On the surface, it may seem like just a really cool spot for pups—for example, the fire hydrant-themed watering spot; lush, grassy runs; and separate areas for small and large dogs.
But the City of Ferndale’s newly completed Ferndale Dog Park is a great spot for two-legged visitors as well.
“There’s landscaping, benches in shaded areas in the run as well as in a viewing spot outside, and a watering area with built-in concrete bowl so the area doesn’t get mucky,” says Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Loyd Cureton. “We thought a lot about the user experience, both for dogs and people.”
The Ferndale Dog Park, which has been eagerly anticipated by residents for months, was completed by DPW staff this week. Located at the east end of Wilson Park on south Hilton Rd., the park offers a number of amenities, including spacious fenced-in dog runs/play areas for both large and small dogs, a watering station, and urine-resistant grass and shrubbery.
The park also offers some extra touches that will be appreciated by two-legged visitors, such as the much talked-about bone-shaped sitting benches and paw print-patterned picnic table—“Made in-house by DPW staff using salvaged and reclaimed materials,” explains Cureton. The park also comes outfitted with poo pickup stations (complete with baggies); a new fence and locking gate, which will be accessible by key fob; and cement and rocks in areas where it’s likely to get muddy, such as the watering station.
